An incident at a foreclosure auction brought out the humane side of mankind. The heroine of the piece is Marilyn Mock. She acted on the spur of the moment and drew the attention of a grateful nation reeling under the cruel lashes of the foreclosure tsunami.
Fifty-year-old Mock went to attend a foreclosure auction at Dallas. Acting on pure humane grounds she bought back the house of Tracy Orr for her. It was located in Pottsboro. Her good deed has caused Good Morning America to repeatedly knock on her door, made the police investigate the news truck and led to a series of interviews with celebrities like Oprah, Ellen and Dr. Phil. It goes to show how rare good deeds have become in the harsh society of today.
Mock is overwhelmed with the attention as she moves around the rock yard she manages. In tow are her two fat pigs. She is reticent saying, “ I don’t understand it. I just happened to be there and anybody else would have done the same thing.”
It is doubtful whether in these hard foreclosure hit times anybody would bid for a piece of property without laying eyes on it and for a totally complete stranger. Mock paid nearly $30,000 for the property keeping her dump truck as a collateral for the mortgage. Now Orr will make repayments to her instead of the bank. The two women are waiting for Fannie Mae to give the final green signal before they visit the single-family house of Orr. In 2004 Orr had taken a mortgage of $80,000 for it. Mock found the matter simple when she said, “She needed help. That was it.” At the time of the bidding Mock was seated on the floor listening to the goings on when casually a conversation was struck up between the duo. Orr was in tears fearing the loss of the house that was her home.
Texas has seen 30,500 houses slip into foreclosure so far this year as per the findings of foreclosure.com. All these factors were preying on Mock’s mind when she grabbed hold of Orr’s arm and took control of the matter. For sometime Orr could not be found. Mock was confused. How would she explain to her husband that she had bought a house for a woman whom she did not know? But Orr was waiting outside in an emotional state of tears. It was then that the cameras found them.
