Facing Up To The Foreclosure Crisis In Nevada

The foreclosure crisis has reached out its tentacles to all sections of the society. It all originated from the sub-prime mortgage market with a mess being made by predatory lending and irresponsible borrower. Teaser rates will little or no down payments lured borrowers dreaming about owning houses, into the net of floating interest rates. As soon as the latter began to rise the problem came out naked with bared fangs. The foreclosure number rose to such jumbo proportions that nobody was safe. Property prices fell and socio-economic problems rose with vagrants and snakes in overgrown gardens ruling the roost. Municipality taxes fell. Police and schools ran out of funds. A massive credit crunch made mortgage companies, big and small, pull down shutters. So a concerted effort is being put up to face it. Governor Jim Gibbons had a meeting with Las Vegas lenders to discuss the matter of solutions in Nevada.

The traumatized house owners are waiting for the state to give the lead. Competition is so steep that a foreclosure seems to be the only way out. Skip Rohl has lost out on sleep to give the cosmetic touch to his house to be able to sell it by the end of the week to the highest bidder – who is reasonable of course. But what is reasonable? That is the big question in the market today. Skip’s asking price is what he paid for it $191,000 but he will lucky to get something near to it on the less side. There are just too many houses to be sold. By the close of 2008 1.7 million will foreclose right across the country.

Governor Gibbons puts the question – how can these hard working families of Nevada be helped? Without going into negative blame game Gibbons wants action producing positive action. The call of the hour is free dialogue. He admits the problem is difficult but not impossible to solve. It will take time. The Governor has no time frame but is optimistic that sooner than later something concrete will come up. Hope keeps man alive – is his way of thinking.

Time is something Skip does not have. But he keeps on hoping for the silent auction bail out. Perhaps others like him will benefit too. It is a sale he wants and this is what months of waiting could not get for him.
