Innocent Foreclosure Victims – The Pets

Foreclosure respect nothing – region, income, social status or even the difference between species. Pets too have to pay the price for human failings. It is a sad story being repeated in Las Vegas. Many of the families who are evicted because of foreclosures are decamping bag and baggage but without their pets. The unfortunate animals are left behind. Las Vegas streets are dotted with ‘For Sale’ signs. The horrendous part of this is that more often than not, the casual passerby will hear coming from the interiors, the sounds of howling abandoned pets. The Las Vegas animal rescue groups claim that 40% of the dogs under their shelter are all due directly or indirectly to foreclosures.

It is difficult to believe that man could be so cruel – but it is a reality in this Sin-City. It is a daily feature. Blue and Princess Sara are just two Weirmaraners of the many of their kind. Jocelyn Arter is the president of Weirmaraner Rescue. She says that the banks come and put a lock on the door without checking if there are any pets inside. The families flee trying to save their lives. It is a question of survival. Needless to say they cannot get back their dogs. Princess Sara was discovered in the backyard locked in without either food or water. Neighbours sometimes threw stuff over the fence for her to survive. The condition of the animals was terrible – skinny and emaciated. Many have faced a slow death. Neighbours are doing their best to contact animal help but it does not work all the time. The community itself is stressed as too are the people managing the shelters who are working far beyond their capacity to help the quadrupeds. In the case of the Weimaraners a foster mother was found but dogs have the habit to continue to mourn for their past masters. It is in their very nature. Perhaps time, with lots of hugs and kisses from the new mistress will heal the wounds – perhaps.

The saddest part is that humans are so busy with their own merry-go-round that neither the individual nor the society is aware of the gravity of the crime being committed against Nature’s creatures. To them the problem does not exist. The victim cannot call out for help.

Dog rescue groups are running a donation drive. Similar steps have been taken by cat adoption groups.
