Animal Pets Are Now Victims Of Foreclosures

Of late the animal shelter in Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach have woken up to the fact that a number of pets are being brought over by people who have been evicted from their houses because of foreclosures and now do not know what to do with their pets. Joan Radabaugh the executive director of the unit said that last month she noted that eight animals had come for shelter from homes that had snapped because of foreclosures. Another 38 people just left their pets and hurriedly moved off, too ashamed to talk about eviction. One out of every 95 houses in Florida are facing foreclosures. It is time to pause and think about the fate of the pets also that are caught in this trap. The Humane Society of the United States recently reminded the people to remember that pets are members of their family when they plan to move out. The society gets four to five calls in a week from people shifting into apartments with having problems with pets. In the last four months things have got from bad to worse. On an average the no-kill shelter take care of 350 animals per day but because of space crunch many have to be refused. The added problem is that people moving into new tenements are often not allowed to keep pets. The number of people citing this reason have gone up from 3 to 27 and those giving the excuse that the have no home have risen from 12 to 18 in February this year. The strong suspicion that all these are directly or indirectly related to foreclosures. The situation is spilling over beyond the dog and cat zone. In a barn near Palm Beach County care is taken of an emaciated horse in the County’s Animal Care and Control’s main shelter. In one day six horses in the same condition had to be taken in. It is a cause for worry when suddenly half a dozen famished horses turn up because the owners can longer keep them. Why is this happening abruptly? The answer seems to be linked with foreclosures. The County Animal Control has always in the forefront whenever cases of pet abandonment arise. Overnight almost the calls have risen. The most difficult part is to witness the pangs of separation between man and beast at the time of parting.
