Cats and Dogs Unjustly Penalized by Foreclosures

Cats and dogs and even horses are being unjustly penalized by the foreclosure crisis. More and more families are being compelled to leave the houses that were their homes due to foreclosure. The pets are either abandoned or sent to animal shelters. It is a traumatic experience to dumb animals.

No numbers are precisely known and there is no system of finding out exactly how many of the pets have been adversely affected by the foreclosure crisis. Some guesses can be gauged from the reports coming in from animal shelters. The number is growing and the protectors of the animals are deluged with numbers. They are not equipped to handle this flood.

Many of the pet owners bring their animals to the shelter and simply say that they are shifting without giving any further details. The shelters in areas where the foreclosure crisis has been harsh are worst affected. The pet owners are forced to move to apartments or temporary hideouts and as such they cannot look after their pets; looking after themselves is a challenging job for domesticated animals.

While the foreclosure victims are hunting around for new rented quarters they are finding that more and more landlords are refusing those with pets. They fear damage to their properties and disturbance to other renters. Those who permit pets restrict the numbers and also the kind of pet. For instance one landlord may say it is alright to keep a cat but not a dog.

There are many instances of pets being just left behind to fend for themselves. Some are not even given that chance in the open but the pets are left behind chained. Workers, realtors or humane neighbours discover them to their horror and anguish. It is the lucky ones who are transferred to the shelters. But a good number face a slow death without food or water.

The shelter authorities are not only facing a deluge in number of pets but the donations are dwindling – thanks to the recession. Also people are not coming forward as they used to previously to adopt the pets kept in the shelters. At a time when people are avoiding puppies and kittens what chance do older dogs and cats have during these harsh days?

Stephen Zawistowski of American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said, “What we’ve always known is that when times are hard for people, they’re hard for their pets.”
