Nancy Nix, the Treasurer of Butler County has taken the lead in finding a solution to the foreclosure problem. She is talking to agencies right across the county who are engaged in counseling and other allied types of services to help foreclosure victims. Her aim is to set up a single port of call for those seeking help.
Nancy is of the opinion that one of the things a county treasurer can do is help people forestall foreclosure. So the first thing is to make a thorough study of what kind of services are required before programming the staff to kick off field operations. She is optimistic that in a public meeting scheduled to be held on 27th November she will be able to spell out the specific type of services.
The problem is looming large with Ohio leading the national foreclosure race. Butler County has recorded already 588 foreclosures which means 88% increase in filings from 2001 to 2006. The worst thing is that the crisis is going to get worse. Nobody knows when it is going to take a turn. This is the opinion of Lorie Bardorf, the Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services, which is a non-profit group offering financial advice.
The foreclosure story does not end with the individual family being evicted from the house but the secondary infection affects the entire neighbourhood. Desolate houses leads to an increase in crime. On thing leads to another and the call of the hour is to tackle all these points one by one. The most important thing at this juncture is to spread out the message that the victim is not alone in this hour of need but many are there to help. The exact scope of the help is still not clearly defined but by creating awareness and educating the people they can be taught to steer clear of dangerous loans. It is these loans that are the main cause for the foreclosure crisis says Batdorf. It is this coupling with high rates of unemployment that has stirred up a hornet’s nest of trouble. However it is admitted that pamphlets and platitudes are of little use to those already boiling in the foreclosure cauldron. Nix wants to be specific and does not want to waste time and taxpayer’s money on repeating action already being taken or on empty talk.
