Foreclosures Blamed For Suicide Of Couple

With the foreclosure crisis escalating the accusing finger is pointing to the sub-prime loans for causing this chaos. It is now no longer confined to an economic field but is telling on the social fabric. Thousands are becoming homeless running around to find dignity in life again. But all cannot survive the strain and give up the fight with their bodies.

The pressure of foreclosure was too much for Raymond and Deanna Donaca. When they lost the legal battle they made it clear that the Donacas would not leave their house alive – not matter what the court verdict. The neighbours got alarmed when nobody answered the door – not even the dogs. Word was sent to the Sheriff who arrived to the house east of
Prineville. From outside one could smell the gas. Inside the garage the engine of an empty Cadillac Eldorado was running. In the house was found the bodies of Raymond (71), Deanna (69) and their four pet dogs. Sgt. Chapman was emphatic that in the past they had clearly made statements of not going out alive from this house that was their home.

The couple had lost this property in Central Oregon this year in summer after losing a court battle. Financial problems for more than a decade had been the cause of foreclosure leading to this tragedy. In 1992, 2004 and 2006 they had filed for bankruptcy and many liens were placed against their property. Raymond had been a contractor for the US Forest Service. His work was hauling logs and bulldozing through undergrowth. He and his wife kept to themselves and did not care for company, said his brother who lives near. However word had got around that the couple was facing financial trouble. Chapman had gone to the home of the Donacas earlier to deliver a notice from the new owners saying that they would have to vacate the premises by a specified day. Everybody knew that the foreclosure game was on in full swing but nobody knew that this was how the couple would give an answer to it

Although right across the nation foreclosures are making double and triple jumps, in Crook County the position is relatively not so acute. This tragedy should not have happened here. But each case of foreclosure is individual specific and one cannot use a rule of thumb for all.
