Rev Jackson Alarmed About Rising Foreclosures And Police Corruption

On Saturday (3rd November) on a live international show, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. who is the founder president of Rainbow PUSH coalition discussed mainly two issues – rising foreclosures and police corruption.

The case of 23-year-old Coprez Coffie was cited. Coprez won $4 million from a judgment against the Chicago Police department in October. Two officers accusing him of possessing drugs had actually sodomized him with a screwdriver while searching. Jackson thundered that after being accused for such a crime no policeman should be allowed to sport a badge and gun – symbols of authority. He will collect at least 50,000 signatures to have the officer registered as a sex offender and removed from the force. To press for justice the police departments will be picketed. The screwdriver stained with the blood and feces of Coffie was found in the glove compartment of the police car. The two officers claimed that they had no idea from where it had come.

Turning to the foreclosure crisis Jackson quoted local statistics saying that in Illinois State one out of every 623 houses were in foreclosure. Nobody can remain unaffected because the fires are in the neighbourhood.

Jackson had also previously toured the country with the express purpose of focusing on the foreclosure catastrophe. In the previous week he had met Ben Bernanke the chairperson of the Federal Reserve. Chuck Prince, the CEO of Citigroup has resigned. This points to the fact that the American ship is sinking, opined Jackson. Unfortunately it is the poor who are going to drown first because they are in the hull. But the waters are rising. Those on the deck including the captains cannot be spared. All will go down with the ship.

Rev. Jackson and his team mates of Rainbow PUSH coalition will continue to see to the concerns of the residents – their unsafe living conditions of the homeless living with drug pushers. He threw a challenge to the police force to solve this problem of homelessness and drugs. The police are supposed to help and not harass.

Rev. Jackson has been advocating for quite some time for safe public housing units especially in the Ickes homes. These are often targets of police ire. Next Saturday Rev. Jackson will talk at a free home heating and energy fair to be hosted in the headquarters of PUSH.
