Single-family Homes

It is the dream of every American to one day own a home—the white picket fence is optional. The most popular kind of home in America is a single-family home, which as you might expect, is designed to house a single family. These homes are built on lots that are usually only slightly larger than the house itself and are surrounded by other single-family homes. The homeowners also have access to the residence by way of a driveway and there is often a garage or carport that is either attached or stands separate from the residence.

The current alternatives to a single-family home include: condominiums, duplexes or multiplexes, apartment homes or apartment buildings, and townhouses. In most of these structures, a number of families will reside under the same roof or in the same complex.

Why you should buy a single-family home?

The main reason most families decide to purchase this kind of home is because it offers privacy. Unlike an apartment house or a duplex, the home and the land that it sits on belongs entirely to you. As a result, you won’t have to tap the broom handle on the living room floor or knock on the wall to get your neighbor to turn down the music. And if your family has a few unexpected additions, you probably won’t have any difficultly adding more rooms as needed. Another reason why you might want to buy a single-family home is simple pride of ownership. As we mentioned, it is the goal of most Americans to own their own home. This dream is more that just simple sentimentality or tradition. A home represents stability and promise. It is also, most likely, the biggest investment you will ever make, and something that you can pass on to your children in the future.

Why you should not buy a single-family home?

If you do decide to buy your own home, all of the repair costs will come out of your own pocket. There is not longer a crusty old landlord to fix the faucets or unclog the toilets. When you own your own home, you become the designated handyman, or else you hire a more qualified individual to handle the job. Another thing to think about is landscaping fees. If you lived in an apartment complex before, you probably never gave a thought to the lawn, the bushes or the trees. But when you own your own home, it will be your responsibility to pay for upkeep.

Why you should buy a single-family home now?

Due to the recent meltdown in the housing market, many homes that have been foreclosed upon by their banks are currently being offered at incredibly low prices. Although every deal is not an exceptional one, there has never been a better time to buy a single-family home in America.
